I tried college for a while and the timing just wasn’t right. Since then, I’ve had a hard time finding work that fits. When I turned 25, I felt kind of stuck—really stuck. I knew I wanted to leave home, but I kept spinning and couldn’t see my future. Coaching is teaching me how to fight my internal “saboteurs.” I can see my talents more clearly now and know that it’s okay to get started even though I don’t know what the next five years will look like.

My husband and I wanted to be empty nesters without losing the strong relationship with our 20 year-old. We used coaching to recognize what values were not being honored. That allowed us to define our relationship with our son and have meaningful talks about his transition away from home. After several sessions, we set family goals and boundaries without losing trust in our family. We worked together to help him start on his own and are overjoyed watching him succeed!

I wish I would’ve had a coach and the book prior to my transition because I had to figure out so much stuff on my own. When I finally engaged a coach, I was able to move to an organization that has proved to be a strong cultural fit. I’m still working on my personal vision to make sure I keep on the path that’s right for me in the civilian workforce.

I was really hurt when my parents made me move out. I struggled and finally hit a wall. My dad said coaching could help and, honestly, I wasn’t excited about it at first. But I did it and I’ve learned a lot about myself. It turns out that I was doing stuff that didn’t match my values which made me unhappy. My coach helped me discover how good I am at certain things. Now I realize that it’s okay to ask for help and still be out on my own. I can do both!

It was hard to focus after I received my metastatic breast cancer diagnosis—everything seemed bleak, and I felt detached. Coaching helped me recognize that my values are different now. I’ve used the sessions to help me prioritize my time in the face of all these uncertainties. Coaching can really work for anything. In one of my favorite sessions, my coach helped me recognize how I've been avoiding cleaning my garage and empowered me with structures to hold myself accountable.

Even though I knew the transition from the military to the civilian workforce would be hard, I didn’t appreciate the complexes and differences in both language and culture. I could have prepared for these challenges if I had the right resources to guide the way. I learned that you can’t walk around with your rank in your back pocket. A coach to support you during the transition is worth your time.

Until I participated in the research that led to the Mission Next book, I didn’t realize how much veterans struggle with their transition to the civilian workforce. Our organization will be establishing a Veterans Affinity Group so our current veterans can connect and share experiences. We are also going to engage a coach to help each of our veterans integrate into the organization.
